Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge
Just north of Stevensville, on the banks of
the Bitterroot River and bordered by fertile ranch and
farmland, is the state’s most popular wildlife refuge. The
Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge was established 43
years ago in honor of the late Montana Senator, Lee Metcalf,
who was known nationally for his commitment to conservation
movements.

Hilltop
Wind - RATPOD
It’s a little before eight in the morning
and I’m climbing out of Dillon, Montana, on County Road 278.
To the north are the Pioneers, a compact hump of a mountain
range still capped in snow. To the south, an expanse of
green foothills falls away to a smaller jumble of peaks.
Ahead, a narrow stretch of asphalt twists and rises up into
a cloudless June sky, then disappears between two rock
outcroppings.

Raptor View Research Institute
It is another gorgeous sunny autumn day atop
the continental divide as researchers from (RVRI)
begin another day of counting and trapping migratory
raptors. The day starts out calm when, all of a sudden, the
radio belches out, “ Ten seconds away, Golden Eagle coming
into the station nobody move.” Immediately, each member of
the RVRI crew goes still and holds his or her breathe.
Suddenly there is a loud whoosh as the eagle rips the wind.
“I got it!” Screams one of the biologists over the radio,
and the team from Raptor View goes into motion.

For The Children
Missoula’s Flagship Program has a slogan that in seven words
tells you all you need to know about the group’s mission:
Because after school shouldn’t be an afterthought. Indeed,
recent research indicates that most of the trouble young
people encounter with alcohol, drugs, and other risky
behavior occurs between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. during the work
week. Having identified the trouble zone, Flagship aims to
give kids a series of fun—at times thrilling, always
educational and always, always FREE—after school activities
that build social skills and increase the likelihood of
academic success.
