The Trailhead

When it comes to gearing up for great times, there’s only one place to shop. For more than thirty years The TrailHead has outfitted western Montana adventurers with the finest outdoor equipment.
Little has changed since The TrailHead first opened its doors. The TrailHead still offers the highest quality goods for the outdoorsmen in the know.
Now these same products can be found at a new location. The TrailHead recently moved into the old Missoula Mercantile Warehouse located near the Clark Fork River at 221 East Front Street in downtown Missoula. The TrailHead continues the tradition of gearing up the Three Rivers area with its newly renovated building, except now the store has even more room to carry its quality goods.
Although many of the high-quality products are expensive, The TrailHead offers some of the most competitive pricing in town. If a customer finds a cheaper price on an item, then The TrailHead will match it. Customers also have the added security of buying goods from people who actually use the same products.
When you go to buy a sleeping bag at The TrailHead, you’re probably buying it from someone who has actually slept in one within the past month, says Todd Frank, who bought The TrailHead five years ago. And, although Frank is the new owner, it doesn’t mean he isn’t familiar with the products he sells. He had two decades worth of work experience in the industry before he deciding to purchase the store.
Product familiarity is one of the advantages of shopping at The TrailHead. Customers deal with people who are passionate about the products they sell. You’ll find outdoor distance runners selling shoes and boots, while you can find seasoned backpackers selling hiking gear.
Counterintuitively, the familiarity with the products often creates an adverse effect when it comes to attracting business. People are often intimidated by the expertise of the employees, Frank says, when actually, this is all the more reason for people to shop at the store.
“You don’t have to be a hard-core user to come to a place like The TrailHead,” Frank says.
Instead, those who are beginners and novices are shown precisely what they need the first time, instead of getting burned by inferior products and having to pay more in the long run. And if the customer doesn’t need a high-end product, the staff is more than happy to show them what would suit their specific needs.
The majority of the products sold at The TrailHead also carry a lifetime warranty. So for the bruisers, who fully utilize their equipment, The TrailHead should be an automatic stop.
Those who have never been into The TrailHead, or if it’s been awhile, should check out the new location. The store is cool enough to just go look around. And for those who do need some outdoor gear or apparel, The TrailHead is the place to go.
